There are three wires going to the motor instead of two. The wiring between the ESC and the Arduino consists if the same 5 wires. The three wires give the brushless motors more pulling power. The five wires coming off the circuit board are the same as those coming off the ESC attached to the brushed dc motor and the servo motor circuit board "2 for power in and 3 go to the arduino". The pulses mean the same as the brushless dc motor. The only difference is that at maximum RPM, there are still pulses. There is not one long pulse like the brushed dc motor. The only physical difference is that there are three wires into the motor you may not be able to see them when it is mounted on a circuit board.

Each section of windings is switched on for each direction of magnetic field. Since in this arrangement a magnetic pole can be reversed without switching the direction of current, the commutation circuit can be made very simple (e.g., a single transistor) for each winding. Typically, given a phase, the center tap of each winding is made common: giving three leads per phase and six leads for a typical two phase motor. Often, these two phase commons are internally joined, so the motor has only five leads.
