Typically, given a phase, the center tap of each winding is made common: giving three leads per phase and six leads for a typical two phase motor. Often, these two phase commons are internally joined, so the motor has only five leads.

The motor that drives the paper path in laser printers is brushless. They are build differently than servo or brushed motors. There are no places where metal is rubbing against metal. Brushless motors will last longer, spin faster, help batteries last longer. They have three wires instead of two. There are two types: inrunner and outrunner.
